The Drosera scorpioides is a carnivorous plant belonging to the genus Drosera, native to the southwestern regions of Australia. It is one of the so-called “pygmy sundews,” characterized by their small size and specific adaptations that allow them to survive in extreme, nutrient-poor environments. For this reason, it is normal for the plants sold to be small in size, precisely because the species is naturally diminutive. They grow larger over the years, but they are plants with a defined life cycle that will die after 2 or 3 years if not propagated via winter gemmae; therefore, it is usually better to have "small-sized" plants as they are younger and can be grown for a longer period.
Main characteristics:
- Leaves: Forms a compact rosette of small, fleshy leaves covered in glandular tentacles that secrete a viscous mucilage to trap insects. The tentacles react quickly to capture by wrapping around the prey.
- Color: The leaves are generally green, but with strong light exposure, they can take on reddish hues that make them particularly decorative.
- Flowers: Produces very delicate white flowers that develop on thin stalks, emerging above the rosette.
- Habitat: It is adapted to sandy, nutrient-poor soils typical of Australian heaths, where it withstands dry summers by entering a form of dormancy.
Characteristics
The Drosera captures its prey using leaves covered in sticky glands (trichomes). Insects, attracted by the shiny, dew-like droplets, become trapped. The plant slowly rolls up its leaves to digest the prey and extract nutrients.

Drosera scorpioides
It requires bright but indirect light, such as filtered light. It can tolerate a few hours of direct sunlight in the morning or late afternoon, avoiding the hottest parts of the day.
It prefers a consistently moist substrate. Use only distilled, demineralized, or rainwater, avoiding prolonged stagnation and hard water.
It grows well at temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It is important to protect it from frost, maintaining a warm and humid environment during cold periods.
Gently remove any dry leaves or digested prey remains to prevent mold and keep the plant healthy. Do not use chemicals.
