The Drosera capensis ‘Bainkloof’ is a variety of carnivorous plant native to South Africa. It is distinguished by its elongated leaves, which are thicker and stockier than those of a classic Drosera capensis; furthermore, the “Bainkloof” form often exhibits more robust growth and an intense red color in good light.
Main characteristics:
Leaves:
It forms an elongated rosette composed of ribbon-like, flexible leaves covered in glandular trichomes that secrete a sticky exudate to trap prey. Once an insect is caught, the leaf tends to curl around it to facilitate digestion.
Color:
The leaves are generally green, with bright red trichomes that increase in intensity with good light exposure. This chromatic contrast makes it one of the most ornamental Drosera.
Flowers:
It produces pink or white flowers, arranged on long stems that rise above the plant. Flowering is abundant and frequent, sometimes even several times a year under optimal conditions.
Habitat:
In the wild, it grows in wet areas of South Africa, such as marshes and peat bogs, characterized by acidic, nutrient-poor soil. It is a species that tolerates both cool conditions and warmer climates well, provided the substrate moisture remains constant.
Plant in a Ø 6.5 cm pot
Characteristics
Drosera captures its prey using leaves covered in sticky glands (trichomes). Insects, attracted by the shimmering, dew-like droplets, become trapped. The plant slowly rolls up its leaves to digest the prey and extract nutrients.

Drosera capensis "Bainkloof"
It requires bright but indirect light, such as filtered light. It can tolerate a few hours of direct sun in the morning or late afternoon, avoiding the hottest parts of the day.
It prefers a constantly moist substrate. Use only distilled, demineralized, or rainwater, avoiding prolonged water stagnation and hard water.
It grows well at temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. It is important to protect it from frost by maintaining a warm and humid environment during cold periods.
Gently remove any dried leaves or remains of digested prey to prevent mold and keep the plant healthy. Do not use chemical products.
