Darlingtonia californica is a unique North American carnivorous plant, famous for its sinuous, tubular traps that resemble the head of a cobra ready to strike. Its modified leaves form erect pitchers with a characteristic translucent “window” that disorients insects, guiding them into the trap. It is an extremely fascinating and spectacular species, highly prized by collectors for its unusual shape and ingenious passive capture behavior.

Characteristics

Very bright light. Ideal for direct morning sun or strong artificial light. Avoid direct sun during the hottest hours. Good lighting promotes compact growth and intense colors. * Darlingtonia californica goes through a true winter dormancy. * In autumn, growth slows down progressively. * In winter, it requires cold temperatures and a reduction in vegetative activity. * During dormancy, keep the substrate moist but not soggy. * Vegetative growth resumes in spring with the increase in temperatures and light. Darlingtonia californica is native to the mountainous regions of Northern California and Oregon, where it grows along cold, well-oxygenated streams in poor, constantly moist soils. It lives in sunny environments but with roots kept cool by running water. Capture technique: It uses passive pitfall traps: insects are attracted by the nectar, disoriented by translucent windows, and end up inside the pitcher, where they slide into the digestive fluid with no possibility of escape.
