Characteristics

Very bright environment Spring, Summer, Autumn North America

The perfect trap:

Imagine two modified leaves, joined along a central vein, opening like the pages of a book. Inside these "pages" are highly sensitive hairs called trichomes. These hairs act as sensors and, when touched by an insect, trigger a mechanism that closes the trap.

How it works:

Attraction: Dionaea attracts insects with nectar glands that produce a sugary liquid. This nectar has an irresistible scent for insects, drawing them to the trap.
Contact: Once landed on the leaf, the insect inevitably touches one or more trichomes. This initial contact isn't enough to trigger the trap.
Closing: For the trap to close, the insect must touch multiple trichomes or the same trichome multiple times within a short period of time. This mechanism prevents the plant from wasting energy by closing the trap due to false alarms, such as a raindrop.
Captivity: When the trap closes, the leaf edges meet perfectly, forming a sort of cage. The teeth on the leaf edges will interlock, preventing the insect from escaping.
Digestion: Inside the trap, the plant secretes digestive enzymes that break down the insect's soft tissue, absorbing its nutrients. This process can take several days.
Reopening: Once digestion is complete, the trap will reopen, ready to catch new prey.

Exposure

This plant seeks a very bright environment all year round, seeking shade during the hottest hours of the summer months.

Watering

Constant water in the saucer 2/3 cm, IMPORTANT always use distilled water.

Temperature

Dionaea muscipula (Venus flytrap) originates from peat bogs in North America, so it thrives in a temperate climate with warm summers and cold winters. This plant is accustomed to living chastely outdoors from spring onwards until October. Dionaea muscipula will experience vigorous growth and then decline in winter, but don't worry, it's normal!

Cleaning

Dionaea Muscipula, accustomed to living in the peat bogs of North America, therefore needs a substrate that is half acidic sphagnum peat and half perlite.
Trying to change the substrate every year.
